KUCHING: Satok Ramadan Bazaar today received overwhelming response from the public on its first day of operation.

Ibrahim officiates at the opening of Satok Ramadan Bazaar.

In light of this, Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki reminded the public, particularly the patrons and traders, to stay vigilant at all times.

“It is hoped that they will always comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set.

“Even though we are now entering the endemic phase, it is important to be vigilant at all times.

“But as I can see, Sarawakians are very good and disciplined people. That is why we see our rate (of COVID-19 infection) is among the lowest in the country,” he said at the launch of the bazaar here today.

After that, he distributed a box of face masks to each of the stalls there.

“The initiative of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) in handing over the boxes of face masks is part of its reminders to the traders to adhere to the SOPs,” he added.

Ibrahim hoped the bazaar would help the traders affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to earn money.

“The Ramadan Bazaars have not been permitted to operate in the state for a long time. Now when they are allowed, you can see that the number of patrons coming here has doubled.

“We can see that some traders here started to sell at 3 pm and by 4 pm, the food that they sell had sold out. It is good to see such a positive response from the public,” he said.

For the record, DBKU provides two locations for the Ramadan Bazaars; the other location is at Mydin Mall Samariang.

For the sake of the people’s wellbeing, the number of plots offered is limited in accordance with the new norms among traders and patrons – 56 plots were provided in Satok and 69 plots at Mydin Mall Samariang.

All hawkers at the bazaar locations are required to comply with the conditions of the permits that have been issued and all food handlers are required to adhere to food handling ethics in line with the requirements under the Food Act 1983 and the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009.

Visitors to the bazaars are required to adhere to the SOPs such as registering with MySejahtera at the entrances. Only visitors who have been fully vaccinated are allowed to visit the bazaars.
