KOTA SAMARAHAN: Safer food storage practices took centre stage at the Food Safety Mini Carnival held here yesterday.

Organised by the Samarahan Health Department, the carnival highlighted the Germ Buster Challenge-Chat Explorace which involved the district’s school children.

Seven schools namely, Sekolah Kebangsaan Jemukan; Sekolah Kebangsaan Abang Kadir, Gedong; Sekolah Kebangsaan Haji Bujang Rangawan Putih, Sadong Jaya; Sekolah Kampung Tanjung Tuang; Sekolah Kebangsaan Abang Man Simunjan; Sekolah Kebangsaaan Munggu Lalang and Sekolah Dato Traoh Muara Tuang took part in the carnival.

Samarahan Epidemiology officer Dr Mohd Khairul Anuar Roselan said the students were made to go through activities related to food safety and quality and how to avoid or prevent food poisoning.

“Through the programme we could disseminate information and educate the participants,” he said when officiating at the programme at a mall here yesterday.

He said the programme was a first and hoped the department could organise more in the future to involve food handlers and operators.

“It goes without saying that food industry operators should also practise food safety and cleanliness to prevent food poisoning,” he said.

Dr Mohd Khairul revealed that eleven food operators in Samarahan are given the Bersih, Sihat and Selamat (BeSS) certificate in the programme.

“The BeSS certification is a monitoring programme implemented by the Ministry of Health to encourage the food operators to provide a safer and healthier food to their customers,” he said.
