KUCHING: Pustaka Negeri here will hold a virtual talk on Multi-Ethnic Medium in Sarawak: A Study Lingua Franca on June 26.

The talk will be delivered by Dr Mohammed Azlan Mis from the Linguistics Programme, Language and Linguistics Centre, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia via Pustaka Negeri’s media site; Facebook and YouTube at 10am.

“This talk is the result of the research conducted based on the diversity of languages in a plural society.

“What is meant by lingua franca in this study is the language used to communicate between speakers whose first language is different from each other (Samarin 1968),” said a spokesperson.

“The language for communication is usually the most widely and frequently used language in daily life.

“In Sarawak, there are various tribes that use their own language. At the same time, they also use a language of communication that is shared, understood, appropriate and does not pose communication problems.”
