KUCHING: The Sarawak State Library (Pustaka) will hold a virtual programme entitled ‘Adat Bertungku Selepas Bersalin’.

Pustaka in its statement on Tuesday (Sept 14) said that the programme is in line with the Sarawakiana Festival 2021 themed ‘Daun’ (leaves) this year.

The programme will be held at 10am on Sept 17 and can be viewed via Pustaka Sarawak’s Facebook page (pustaka.sarawak) as well as its YouTube channel (Pustaka Sarawak).

According to Pustaka, the practice of adat bertungku, a traditional postnatal care custom, is important in the Malay community for women who have just given birth.

It shared that there are several types of leaves used in this custom which will be wrapped together with batu tungku (heated stones), betel leaves and noni leaves.

In addition, the library said the traditional postnatal care custom can help mothers who have just given birth to improve the blood flow, break down fat in the body and help restore their bodies to its original state.

Pustaka also said this custom can warm the mother’s body and remove ‘air’ (angin) in the body.
