KUCHING: With the current spike in Covid-19 cases in the country, Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) opines that it may be a good idea to put co-curricular activities in school on hold until it is safe to resume.

Its president Ahmad Malie said there was no need to rush into carrying out non-priority activities such as these.

“Not to mention that the current situation is raising concerns among parents and guardians,” he said when contacted.

However, he emphasised that KGBS always complied with the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) decisions throughout this difficult time — including the decision to allow schools to carry out co-curricular activities.

“KGBS does not deny the importance of having co-curricular activities to provide balanced education to our students.”

At the same time, he urged the MoE to focus on teaching and learning (PdP) programmes first.
He added that students should be directed to return to their respective homes once their study sessions were over as a measure towards curbing the spread of Covid-19.

Ahmad also suggested that PdP periods and the physical presence of students in school be controlled and carefully reviewed.

“The organisation of other activities should be postponed.”

He hoped that the MoE would take KGBS’ views into consideration.
