KUCHING: The position given to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the new Federal Cabinet led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is recognition to Sarawak.

GPS parliamentary chief whip and Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof thanked the prime minister for the appointments, describing it as a “great trust and responsibility” for the sake of Malaysians.

“On behalf of GPS, I would like to express my deepest appreciation and thanks to the prime minister for the appointment of eight GPS representatives in the new Cabinet as announced today which will take effect on Aug 30.

“My appointment as Senior Minister of Works, three others as full ministers along with four deputy ministers is a recognition for the people of Sarawak and GPS led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg

“This appointment is a great trust and responsibility for the sake of the people and the country,” he said in a statement today.

Fadillah said the people had high hopes for the new Cabinet and government during a time where everyone was struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic and the challenging economic situation.

“As emphasised by the prime minister, this Cabinet is a management team that will work with the people and needs to be proactive.

“Our focus now is to ensure political stability, address the Covid-19 pandemic and the country’s economic recovery for the sake of economic survival and the lives of the people.

“Therefore, all parties, politicians regardless of party and all walks of life must together play a role to help make this effort a success,” he said.

At the same time, Fadillah also stressed that the media had an important role in helping the government deal with the pandemic.

“All parties need to join forces and stop the negative elements to free the country from the threat of a pandemic,” he said.
