PWD among agencies geared up for possible floods

KUCHING: The Public Works Department (PWD) is fully prepared to mobilise its assets in the event of flooding during the 15th General Election (GE15).

Caretaker Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said should a flood occur it will provide logistics and transport facilities.

“If there is a landslide or a broken bridge, we will prepare Bailey bridges and so on,” he said to reporters after flagging off the M7 Puzzle Run at SJK Chung Hua Batu 7 Matang, today.

Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman and Tan Kai, a political secretary to the Premier were among those present at the event.

In addition, Fadillah said at the federal level, the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) has prepared for possible floods.

Likewise the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chaired by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and the Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC).

Earlier, Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) Sarawak Director Khairul Najib Ibrahim when contacted said that Malaysia is expected to experience thunderstorms in the afternoon to early night on the day of candidate nomination and polling.

He said the country is then likely to be at the end of the monsoon transition period.

“The country might already be in the North East Monsoon period during that time and the start of the period is in mid-November, specifically Nov 22.

“However, for Sarawak, the impact of the North East Monsoon might only be felt at the end of December ,” said Khairul.
