Quadruple win for Sarawak Energy at UNGCMYB Sustainability Awards 2022

KUCHING: Sarawak Energy continues to receive acclaim for its sustainability efforts when it bagged four Sustainability Performance Awards at the United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei’s (UNGCMYB) Sustainability Celebration Night 2022.

The electricity utility company won the Sustainability Influencer Award.

It also won awards in the following categories:

 

  • Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Ambition Benchmark 7: Science-Based Emissions Reduction in Line with a 1.5 C Pathway;
  • Partnership for the Goals Recognition; and
  • Sustainable Product Recognition.

 

The principal award, Sustainability Influencer Award, was presented to Sarawak Energy Group chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Sharbini Suhaili in recognition of his stewardship and influence in leading the organisation on its sustainability journey.

According to Sarawak Energy in a statement today (Dec 19), Sharbini is a known and regular participant in regional and international sustainability events, advocating sustainable businesses and sustainability best practices.

Sharbini was the only Malaysian CEO to speak at the official United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Pavilion during Sharm el-Sheikh Climate Change Conference (COP 27) at Sharm El- Sheikh, Egypt last month.

He also had the honour of being the only Malaysian CEO invited to attend a royal reception hosted by King Charles of the United Kingdom at Buckingham Palace.

Sarawak Energy said the honours received at UNGCMYB’s Sustainability Performance Awards 2022 are a testament of the group’s leadership in sustainability which is recognised by external stakeholders, as the group progresses towards its aim to become a regional powerhouse.

“The SDG Ambition Benchmark 7: Science-Based Emissions Reduction in Line with a 1.50C Pathway Award credited Sarawak Energy for being the first corporate body in Malaysia to commit and submit the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) for validation.

“The Sustainable Product Recognition Award recognised Sarawak Energy for encouraging the development and consumption of sustainable energy among individuals and corporations.

“As for the Partnership for the Goals Recognition Award, it acknowledged Sarawak Energy for its partnerships with UNGCMYB on sustainability programmes with external parties,” the company said during the award-presentation ceremony in Kuala Lumpur recently.

UNGCMYB is the official local network to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), a strategic policy initiative which aims to mobilise a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders.

It encourages businesses to align strategies and operations with the 10 principles of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and to take actions that advance broader United Nations agendas and goals, such as the SDGs, with an emphasis on collaboration and innovation.

Meanwhile, the UNGCMYB’s Sustainability Performance Awards programme was initiated to recognise the continuous efforts of all its participants and to inspire others to make sustainability an integral part of their business strategies.
