Quarry worker dies, workers’ quarters razed

SIBU: A 40-year-old quarry worker died from suspected shortness of breath following a fire which destroyed two blocks of a workers’ quarters of a quarry in Stapang here on Monday night.

The man, identified as Jack Jubang, died while he was being transported to a health clinic in Nanga Sekuau resettlement scheme.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre said it received a call about the fire incident around 6.13pm on Monday.

Bomba Sungai Merah later deployed 14 firemen with one fire engine, a four-wheel drive and three lorries to the scene.

Sources revealed that the victim was seen moving things out of the burning quarters.

In the 6pm incident, the two blocks of the workers’ quarters with 29 doors that housed 61 quarry workers and their families were completely razed.

Bomba managed to prevent the fire from spreading to another block with 17 doors located nearby and get the fire under control at about 7.45pm.
