MIRI: A Safety Water and Rescue team or SWART will be established, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) national director-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Hamdan Wahid has disclosed.

“In Sarawak, we have many locations identified as high-risk areas involving drowning incidents, thus the establishment of SWART is indeed a must to provide swift response,” he pointed out during a press conference here on Wednesday (Oct 20).

He added that deaths due to drowning in Sarawak were among the highest in the nation.

“Sarawak has about four to five times the number of such incidents based on our data.

“Deaths involving drowning in the country are between 450 and 500 annually.”

Earlier, Hamdan presented excellent service awards to 93 recipients and 24 others with the Pingat Kebesaran Jabatan award.

Three state ministers were among the recipients of the Pingat Kebesaran Jabatan for their roles in assisting Sarawak Bomba during the pandemic.

They are state Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian and Assistant Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting.

Also present at the award presentation ceremony were Sarawak Bomba director Khirudin Drahman, assistant director Tiong Ling Hii and Miri Bomba chief Supt Law Poh Kiong.
