Rabies: 26,228 pets already vaccinated

KUCHING: To date 26,228 pets have been vaccinated to curb the spread of rabies, which has claimed five lives in Sarawak.   

Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), in a statement yesterday said the breakdown of pets vaccinated are for 18,587 dogs, 7,596 cats and 45 other animals.

“Today as many as 1,196 dogs have been vaccinated at the dog vaccination programme to control the spread of rabies outbreak in the Basketball Hall in Siburan and Krokong Community Hall near here from 10am to 4pm.

“Vaccination was also conducted at several villages in Kampung Tringgus Rabak Rotan, Kampung Tringgus Bong, Kampung Tringgus Matan, Kampung Stampin and Stutong,” said the secretariat yesterday.

Today (Saturday) the dog vaccination programme will be held at Sungai Apong Basketball Hall here while in Bau areas, it will be at Kampung Suba Bau, Kampung Suba Bandar, Kampung Grogo, Kampung Nowang, Kampung Opar, Kampung Rumeh, Kampung Tembawang Sauh, Bau, Kampung Stenggang, Kampung Pioram Stenggang, Kampung Sepadah and Kampung Jugan.

To raise public awareness of the rabies outbreak, the secretariat said the Sarawak Veterinary Services Department had organised 159 awareness campaigns in villages and schools in the affected areas which were attended by 31,363 participants.

Meanwhile the Sarawak Health Department reported 27 dog bite cases yesterday, bringing the cumulative cases to 1,442 since April 1.

The secretariat added 13 dog bite cases were reported in the Serian division yesterday followed by Kuching division (12 cases) and Sri Aman division (two cases). – Bernama
