LIMBANG: Not many feline owners are aware that their pets are also at risk of being infected by rabies.

Limbang District Council chairman Sufian Mohat said cat owners must understand that not only dogs get rabies.

“That is why the council, Cat Rescue Club and Department of Veterinary Services are organising the rabies awareness programme for Limbang district, the second to be organised.

“This is to raise public awareness that not only dogs, but other animals such as cats, are also at risk of being infected by rabies,” the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) quoted him saying in a news report.

During the programme, the Limbang Division Health Office also held talks entitled ‘Rabies Disease’ and ‘How to Deal with Pet Bites’.

Sufian, who is also the Cat Rescue Club chairman, said three cases of rabies cases recorded in Limbang district from 2020 until to date.

“We are thankful that there are not many rabies cases in Limbang. So, for us in Limbang district, it is still safe,” he said.

He also reminded the community to take good care of their pets by not letting them roam outside, to check on their pets’ health and most importantly to take them for anti-rabies jabs.

Earlier, Sufian officiated at the two-day Merdeka Fun Cat Show 2022 at Kampung Bunga Raya Hall.

There were a total of 67 entries from cat owners from Limbang district for the cat show.
