Rabies claims eighteenth victim

KUCHING: Rabies has claimed its18th victim in the state when the latest case, Rianni died in the Sarawak General Hospital here at 10.47 Wednesday night.

Rianni, aged 62 was attacked by a stray dog late last month while walking back from work in her housing area in Pending Heights here.

According to her husband, Rianni was an Indonesian Chinese who worked as a maid for a family near their flat. She was on the way back from work when she was bitten.

Rianni was sent to a private clinic after being bitten by the stray dog. Her husband said she was given jabs and last week, her condition worsened.

She was admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital on June 8 in serious condition. Her remains were brought back for burial yesterday morning.

The rabies outbreak was first detected in June, 2107 with the first case occurring in Serian. The epidemic has since then spread all over Sarawak except Limbang division.

Currently, a sole survivor aged 9 is in coma and is being treated at home.
