KUCHING: A Radar Speed Advisory Sign has been installed in Jalan Tun Jugah here and launched on Tuesday (Feb 22), which is among the first in Sarawak.

Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the signs alert motorists of their speed, especially if they go over the speed limit knowingly or unknowingly.

He said besides showing the allowed speed limit, the signs use radar technology to determine an oncoming vehicle’s speed (in kilometres/per hour) and will display the speed on the LED panel integrated into the sign.

“If the vehicle is travelling below the speed limit, the LED panel will display the corresponding speed in green, and if the vehicle has exceeded the speed limit, the panel will display the corresponding speed in red,” he said.

Lee was accompanied by Deputy Minister of Transport (Aviation and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Ministry of Transport permanent secretary Datuk Buckland Bangik, Public Works Department (JKR) senior officers, JKR divisional office senior officers and Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) officers, officiated at the launch.

Apart from Jalan Tun Jugah, Kuching JKR, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, will also be installing the signs in Jalan Batu Kawa and Mile 14, Jalan Kuching-Serian.

Lee said the sign is also able to wirelessly transmit data back to the JKR control centre for statistical analysis purposes. Only information on moving speed and timestamp will be collected. For the time being, no car plate numbers will be recorded.

“By installing a speed reminder, motorists will now have the benefit of an additional reminder of their speed they are travelling, alerting them to slow down and avoid a potential speeding ticket, or accidents,” he said.
