Raid nets eight for illegal gambling

KUCHING: Eight individuals were arrested in a raid by the police on an illegal online gambling centre on Tuesday.  

Padawan district police chief, Supt Aidil Bolhassan said the raid took place at a condominium at Jalan Sungai Tapang around 3.30pm.

A Crime Investigation Division (CID) police team arrested six men comprising two locals and four Indonesians aged 18 to 29. In addition the team also caught two Indonesian women – aged 20 and 40 – who together with the men, would be investigated under Section 4(1)(g) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953. All the six Indonesians will also be investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

“This syndicate is believed to have been operating the call centre for about five months at the location.

“It made about RM5,000 per day. The syndicate used the premises to hide from authorities, and the operator is supplied with a smartphone and a computer by the syndicate,” added Aidil.

During the raid, police seized five computers, 11 mobile phones, three modems, one recording book, electricity bill and a pair of keys to the apartment unit.
