KUCHING: Thousands of Kuchingites braved the unexpected rain to participate in the “Sungkey Picnic Style” event at Padang Merdeka on Saturday evening.

Organised by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), the event attracted people from various backgrounds, all gathered to share a meal during breaking of the fast.

They were well-prepared for the occasion, bringing along food, drinks, tents, camping chairs, and mats.

However, the evening took a turn when rain started around 6.30 pm, leading attendees to seek shelter nearby or under any available cover.

The initiative by DBKU aimed not only to offer Kuchingites an opportunity to break their fast together in a novel setting but also to cultivate a sense of unity among the city’s diverse populace.

DBKU Mayor Hilmy Othman was seen engaging with the community, distributing savoury porridge and dates to those present.

To accommodate the attendees’ needs, temporary spaces for Maghrib prayers were arranged, ensuring a smooth and inclusive experience for all.
