SIBU: It is challenging to consider allowing a Ramadan bazaar to operate at Bandong Walk, Jalan Bandung as a number of positive Covid-19 cases have been detected in the area.

In pointing this out, Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee (SDDMC) coordinator, Dr Annuar Rapaee, said did not rule out the possibility that this year’s Ramadan bazaar in the area might be scrapped if positive cases continue to be recorded in the area.

He noted that the area is one of the popular Ramadan bazaars here judging by the number of customers who go there.

That being the case, the Assistant Local Government and Housing Minister promised that the area will be sanitised immediately to allay public fears and give confidence to people who want to patronise the place.

The decontamination work was carried out on Sunday by firemen after positive Covid-19 cases were detected in Jalan Bandung on Saturday.

Dr Annuar also urged all hawkers in Bandong Walk, including stall operators in the food court to always adhere to the pandemic standard operating procedures (SOPs) by wearing face masks and maintain good personal hygiene.

“If the positive cases continue to rise in this zone, Bandung Walk will not have a Ramadan bazaar,” he said.

“However, discussions will still be held with Sibu Municipal Council (MPS) regarding the matter in order to come up with the final decision.”

He said the discussions will be on the implementation of proper and orderly movement and relevant SOPs in Ramadan bazaars.

“However, with one case detected there (Bandong Walk food court) on Saturday (Mar 27), this is not a good sign for us to open the Ramadan bazaar,” he said.

“If the Ramadan bazaar was to open there, no one would dare to visit the place if there was a case. So that’s why I wanted the place to be disinfected and cleaned,” he added.
