KUCHING: This year’s fasting month brought joy to renal patient, Awang Romawi Awang Mais, when his St Joseph Secondary School class of 1977 classmates got together to fund his dialysis treatment.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is also an alumnus of the 1977 class, handed the contribution on behalf of the group to Awang Romawi at the National Kidney Foundation Dialysis Centre here yesterday.

“We have managed to get the classmates, even the ones overseas, to chip in to fund Awang Romawi’s dialysis treatment and lessen his burden for the upcoming Aidilfitri celebration,” Karim told reporters after his visit yesterday.

Karim revealed that the sum raised from the collection was almost RM20,000.

“This is a reflection of our society, whether you are Chinese, Malay, Dayak or Indian, we help each other irrespective of our backgrounds.

“The idea was mooted by one of our classmates, Dennis Kong, who is an eye specialist and then Ikhwan Zaidel came into the picture as well,” Karim explained.
