KANOWIT: The Sarawak government has agreed to an action plan for the socio-economic development of the former Rajang Area Security Command (RASCOM) settlement here used for relocating villagers at the height of the communist insurgency in the 1970s.

According to Kanowit MP Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, the four areas involved in are Nanga Jagau, Nanga Ngungun, Nanga Tada (Kanowit), and Sekuau (Selangau).

Aaron also said that Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was very responsive to the action plan.

“A meeting will be held in the near future to discuss the development of the area.

“Although the basic infrastructure is already there, from a socio-economic point of view it is not satisfactory and the people there complain and are not satisfied with the situation,” he said.

For the record, RASCOM was established on March 26, 1972 to counter the communist threat in Sarawak, especially in the central region.

Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang, in a news report, was quoted as saying that the Sarawak Government had agreed to establish the Rascom Development Agency (RASDA).

Gira said that RASDA would cover Pakan, Julau, Kanowit, Selangau and Tatau which are under five constituencies namely Meluan, Ngemah, Machan, Tamin, and Kakus.

It will cover an area of three million hectares with a population of about 140,000.
