KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) needs to reach out to the youth that are newly registered as voters through automatic registration.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that during a briefing with Election Commission (EC) on Monday morning, he found out that Sarawak has a total of 600,000 newly automatic registered voters.

“The increase in our votes in Sarawak is only 20 percent, but many who are not registered are those aged 21 to 29 years old.

“These are the people who chose not to register so that the increase of the numbers of voters in Sarawak is 600,000 and it seems that many refuse to register as voters.

“Meanwhile, there are 20 percent of young people aged 18 to 21. This means that GPS must meet with them and talk to them,” he said when officiating at PBB Satok Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri programme at Raia Hotel yesterday.

Abang Johari also said that GPS should be able to move in tandem with the times, including things that were changing around the world.

“Yesterday I was talking with those from Tupong. They congratulated me because now Sarawak has been acknowledged internationally through our economic transition to a green economy.

“This is because I was invited to give a talk overseas last week in front of 1,000 audience on hydrogen,” he said.

He stressed that the way to govern Sarawak would change based on relevance and according to the time – technology and digital era for the benefit of its people.

“Tomorrow, the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting will convene. There are new laws that we will introduce and it will benefit us.

He revealed the Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali will be presenting the bill concerning the new laws.
