MIRI: The Penan community in Long Latie, Sungai Belanah in Telang Usan now have easy access to reading materials, thanks to the unveiling of its ‘Reading Corner’ on Saturday.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said this will help instil a culture of reading among the rural folk — especially children — to improve their literacy rate.

In his opening speech during the launching of the ‘Reading Corner’ at Long Latie Penan Service centre, Dennis thanked Pustaka Negeri Sarawak Miri branch for their initiative in setting up the facility.

“This facility, which is the first of its kind here, will help in fostering a culture of reading among our children in the rural areas,” he said.

He added that over the years, the state government have been promoting initiatives to improve literacy in the community, especially those in rural areas.

“I am confident that the new facility will evoke a positive response,” he said.

Also present during the launching ceremony was Pustaka Negeri Sarawak’s board member Datuk William Patrick Nyigor.
