KUCHING: Samarahan division will be fully developed as the state’s food basket once soil rehabilitation works are completed to prevent saltwater intrusion into the area.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said, the area would be the state’s food basket when all the infrastructures are in place.

“This area is good for large scale plantation of coconut, bananas and pineapples. This will become a food basket and will enhance the development of our agriculture sector,” he said at a press conference on his visit to Sebuyau yesterday.

The chief minister said a collecting, processing and packaging centre would be developed in Sebangan to gather the agriculture produce for export.

“That is an integrated agriculture food basket development then along its coast, we are now installing artificial reef as the area is rich with fisheries from Sebuyau to Muara Tebas.

“That will enrich the fishery resources and at the collection and packaging centre, we will provide preservatives and ice for them to store the produce before it is exported.

“We hope the whole infrastructure will be completed in the area by the end of 2021,” he said.
