SIBU: A salesman lost RM4,438 after he was duped into receiving a non-existent rebate from Shopee recently.

Sibu OCPD ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the district’s Commercial Crime Investigation Division (CCID) received a police report from the complainant pertaining to the case on Monday (Aug 8).

According to the report lodged, the victim said he received a phone call from an unknown individual claiming that his Shopee account was eligible to get a cash rebate amounting RM500.

“Intrigued with the rebate, the complainant later received a link sent through WhatsApp and filled in his wife’s savings account details and credit card details.

“Shortly after, the complainant received the one-time passcode (OTP) and gave it to the caller.

“The man realised that he was conned after his wife checked the account balance and found that money amounting to RM4,438, had been transferred into unknown person’s GrabPay and ShopeePay accounts,” he said.

As a preventive measure, Zulkipli advised the public not to share any OTPs and they should not click on any dubious link sent and do not fill in their banking details into the said link.
