KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth has urged the state government to review and reconsider its 14-day quarantine at home policy for returning Sarawakians.

On April 18, Deputy Chief Minister and State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said effective yesterday, any Sarawakian returning from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Labuan would have to undergo a 14-day quarantine at home instead of at a quarantine centre.

SUPP Youth secretary-general Milton Foo urged the state government to review the policy after criticism of the policy from the public on social media.

“Many criticised this more relaxed policy of home quarantine, including endangering the family members of the returnee, making all the previous efforts of curbing Covid-19 for the past month going down the drain and wasted, thus a mistake in the fight against the pandemic.

“This is the time we must stand together and strictly abide by the orders made by SDMC in order to flatten the Covid-19 curve and to save as many lives as possible,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Foo believed that every order and policy must be made circumspectly as it affected the life of each individual Sarawakian — a matter which is so important that no person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty save in accordance with law; Part II Fundamental Liberties of the Federal Constitution.

“I truly believe that Sarawak will win over this pandemic war if right and informed decisions are made by the authority with full support and collaboration of all Sarawakians,” he added.
