KUALA LUMPUR: The Covid-19 pandemic has not only changed consumers’ shopping behaviours, but also transformed the job market Friday.

Data from the online recruitment platform, MauKerja.my revealed that more employers are seeking for individuals to fill in part-time posts and online-based full-time jobs.

Chief executive officer Ray Teng said the government should take the emerging trend into account in the Short-Term Economic Recovery Plan.

“As the challenging situation is expected to continue in Malaysia over the next few months, we hope that the government can help job seekers by encouraging and providing incentives for companies to speed up their hiring process,” he told Bernama TV recently.

Teng said 30 per cent of companies on MauKerja.my’s platform are still actively hiring, but noted that new employment trends have emerged as companies began to explore new ways of doing business.

He said previously, employers were hiring workers for their physical stores, but now, many are also looking for individuals who can do sales and marketing via ‘Facebook Live’ and other online platforms.

“Working on online platforms requires employees to be re-skilled and re-trained to handle new settings and technologies,” he said.

When the movement control order (MCO) was announced in March, the number of jobs posted on the online recruitment platform had dropped by 70 per cent, said Teng, but the job market started to change in May.

Meanwhile, GoGet co-founder and chief executive officer Francesca Chia Xiat Lin hopes that the government would continue to provide comprehensive measures to help companies re-start and sustain their business activities, while also driving private consumption growth.

“There should be ways to lower the cost of living for the people, especially on basic necessities, enabling the people to spend their disposal incomes to support struggling sectors, including startups and small and medium-sized enterprises in the country,” said Chia. – Bernama
