Red Crescent gives presents to newly born babies at SGH

KUCHING: Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC), Kuching district gave away presents to newly born babies in conjunction with the annual celebration of the World Red Crescent Day today, held at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) here.

The first three babies that were born today in SGH received the gift hampers, presented by Datuk Dr Abang Abdul Rauf Zain and wife, Datuk Dr Munirah Mohd Hassan.

Mothers of the three new-born babies were also presented with a surprise gift each which also coincided with the celebration of the coming Mothers’ Day this weekend.

Besides the gifts, the Malaysian Red Crescent, Kuching District also distributed gifts packs to patients at the hospital’s children wards.

The World Red Crescent Day is celebrated on the May 8 each year, which coincides with the birthday of Hendry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross who was also the first Noble Peace Prize recipient (1901).

The annual celebration held to coincide with Dunant’s birthday, aims to create awareness among the public of the motive of this movement, especially in providing relief to human beings in distress, desolation due to natural calamities and epidemic diseases or food shortage.

Among those present were MRC committee members Datuk Dr Sim Soon Liang, Bong Joo Ping and Joseph Teo.
