MIRI: All self-employed including e-hailing drivers are told to register for the self-employed social security scheme under the Social Security Organisation (Socso) before the deadline this July.

Senator Alan Ling who made the call yesterday morning after presenting disablement benefits to 10 recipients at Miri Socso branch added that action would be taken against those who are not registered.

“The initial coverage of the Self-Employed Employment Injury Scheme under the Self Employment Social Security Act 2017 (Act 789) is for self-employed taxi, e-hailing and bus drivers and Socso is reviewing the extension of the scheme (Self-Employed Employment Injury Scheme) to other self-employed in other sectors such as those in the entertainment industry, which will be implemented simultaneously,” he pointed out.

“If we compare to the total number of drivers in these categoried (taxi, e-hailing and bus drivers) which we estimated to be about 300,000 the figure is very small.

“I hope many in the group will come forward and register as soon as possible and those who need help or have any inquiry may contact Socso’s customer service at 1300228000,” Ling said.

During the event, Ling also distributed dates to Socso staff and its clients.
