MIRI: E-hailing and taxi drivers in Miri are urged to register with the Social Security Organisation (Socso) under the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SESSS).

“We allow and encourage the people, especially those who are self-employed to register and contribute so that they can be protected and covered if anything were to happen,” said Human Resources Minister M. Kulasegaran.

In Miri, a total of 707 e-hailing and taxi drivers were registered with Socso under the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SESSS) last year.

E-hailing is one of the 19 sectors that are included in Socso’s coverage under its SESSS.

“We hope that more e-hailing and taxi drivers will register and contribute to the SESSS this year,” he said when met after his visit to Socso Miri office at Miri Waterfront here yesterday.

Kula revealed that about 20 per cent of e-hailing and taxi drivers nationwide are insured or registered under the SESSS.

“The amount that they need to pay is very minimal, which is only RN13.10 per month,” he said.

The federal government has made it necessary for e-hailing and taxi drivers to contribute through the SESSS beginning November last year.

On another note, Kula revealed that in the past year, a total of 6,157 employers in Miri were registered with Socso, while 95,831 workers were insured.

The amount of compensation paid out by Socso in this district had also gone up, he added.

“In 2015, the amount of compensation paid by Socso was RM2 million, and this figure increased to RM4.6 million last year,” he said.
