KUCHING: A functioning and reliable drainage system is vital in serving two purposes for the villages and residents.
Firstly, it is to ensure the flow of river and sea water can be used for agricultural purposes and secondly, it will prevent floods.
Therefore, such a system is very crucial, said Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, adding that a good flow management and drainage system would definitely benefit the residents and the village.
“For the residents in the village area who are living close to the river, irrigation system is very important, especially during high tide and monsoon season,” he pointed out.
He said this when visiting the implementation of a small bridge or titi to cross a small stream at Kampung Sungai Bako recently.
To ensure that water irrigation system truly benefits the residents, the facility needs to be maintained at all times, Dr Hazland stressed.
“With the unpredictable weather conditions that keep on changing every year, there is a need for the irrigation system to be upgraded and maintained regularly.
“For example, the upgrade of the irrigation system in Kampung Sungai Bako was aimed at mitigating flood disasters and increasing agricultural yields, especially during the dry season,” he said.
In the meantime, he hoped the residents could maintain the cleanliness of the drainage by not throwing garbage mindlessly to avoid clogging the water flow of the irrigation system to the river.
