KUCHING: A total of 10 graves in the Kuching Hokkien Association (KHA) cemetery in 4 ½ Mile will be relocated with the cost of about RM200,000 to make way for the Pan Borneo Highway (PBH) project.

According to State Land and Survey Evaluation officer Monaliza Ismail, the 10 graves located on the opposite road of the SJK Chung Hua 4 ½ Mile need to be relocated to give way for the PBH project.

“The relocation must be done either on or before 28th June 2017, as the State Land and Survey Department needs to hand over the land to the Public Works Department (JKR) for the Pan Borneo Project.

“There might be a slight delay of the relocation due to their traditional belief, and we will be giving a short extended period for them to sort things out,” said Monaliza during the cheque handing over ceremony held at Kuching District Office in Sarawak Islamic Complex, yesterday.

She added the Land and Survey Department will be handing over the land to JKR on 30th June 2017 to ensure the smooth implementation of the Pan Borneo Highway project.  Monaliza also hoped that the relocation process would be implemented as soon as possible.

“We had two meetings with the Kuching Hokkien Association previously to discuss the relocation and hopefully it can be done on time,” she said.

The 10 graves that need to be relocated are located at 404, Block 226, Kuching Land North District, and it would cost about RM20,000 for each grave to be relocated.

Meanwhile, Vice President of Kuching Hokkien Association Tay Yu Siang said that they could only move some of the graves before the 28th June 2017.

“Some of the family members need a right date and time to relocate the grave according to their belief and, the association will be having a meeting to discuss this matter further,” said Tay.

Also present were Land and Survey Department Assistant Evaluation officer Aldrian Siden and Kuching Hokkien Association members.
