KUCHING: With commercial crime cases on the rise, police have reminded the public to remain calm and heed police advice to avoid becoming victims.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri advised the public not to panic when receiving suspicious phone calls that accuse them of getting involved in money laundering cases, among others.

“If you are being contacted by suspicious people asking for banking details or payments, do not transfer any money or provide your banking details. Instead, you should contact the police or the bank for advice.

“One can also download the Whoscall application, to detect the phone numbers listed in the Commercial Crime Investigation Department’s Semak Mule database system,” he said at a press conference here today.

Meanwhile, those who surf the Internet, especially on social media platforms, should be cautious and avoid becoming victims of phishing scams by clicking on a link to a fake bank or company website.

The victims would be asked to fill in their username and password into the fake website, hence many have unknowingly exposed themselves and their banking details to scammers.

Azman said that in order to block their withdrawals, the public should immediately call the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997.

He said the public can also crosscheck the suspect’s bank account number through the Semak Mule PDRM portal or the website at https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my/.

For further information and latest advice on commercial crime and their modus operandi, the public can visit the official portals of PDRM (rmp.gov.my), CCID (ccid.rmp.gov.my) and the Facebook page of Sarawak CCID.
