Former Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud

KUCHING: Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud looks forward to seeing all Malaysians, particularly Christians, come together for Christmas and the New Year to renew their friendships.

“It is a pleasure for me to wish you all a Merry Christmas  and  a Happy New Year,” he said in his Christmas and New Year message.

“May God look after us all and preserve our desire to keep our people united, our society respecting all the good traditions we have inherited and make them richer,” he said.

Taib pointed out that various faiths treasured the teachings of all the prophets in their respective religious catechisms to enable people to have peace and prosperity among each other.

“This is very important because prosperity is always better enjoyed in the environment of better friendship with others. There must always be mutual understanding with the people of various backgrounds.

“We in Malaysia, of course, realise how important it is to remember all the religious catechisms that we have been taught to enable us to work together for the prosperity of our country and to encourage better understanding among our people,” he added.

Taib expressed confidence that the upcoming celebration during Christmas and New Year would be enjoyed based on understanding among one another.

“We have been able to live in peace and harmony with each other in spite of our different backgrounds in terms of races, religions and other social groupings,” he said.

“I wish you all Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and a happy celebration for all Malaysians regardless of our backgrounds,” said Taib.
