KUCHING: Renovation work on the proposed state-of-the-art centre of performing arts is expected to commence by end of this year.

Currently, the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building that will be transformed into a centre for performing arts is closed for renovation.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said there was already a plan and that it would be finalised soon.

“I have presented the plan twice to our Chief Minister. He likes it,” he told reporters when met after watching Ola Bola The Musical at Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya here on Friday night.

Abdul Karim added his ministry would also be working with performing arts professionals to get their input to further improve the upgrading plan.

“When we have a centre for performing arts like this, we need to get those who are passionate in theatre to give us more advice.

“That is why we need somebody like Puan Seri Tiara Jacquelina (Ola Bola The Musical executive producer and director) to give us more input on what are the missing links and the things we should do,” he pointed out.

Asked about the cost of the renovation work, Abdul Karim did not disclose the figures but said the bulk of the costs covered electronic parts.
“I’m not sure whether it will be announced in the Budget, but the chief minister has more or less agreed to the concept and design plan,” he added.

Abdul Karim added he was impressed and entertained by Ola Bola The Musical.

“The cast is perfect. They must have put so much time, effort and commitment… I loved it.

“What I loved about it is that it instilled the spirit of patriotism through musical theatre. We could feel that we are part of this great nation,” he said.
