KAPIT: Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat inspected the ongoing construction of the new double-storey block of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Amang in Jalan Selirik here yesterday.

Jamit is the vice-chairman of the school’s board of management, with Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi as its chairman.

Accompanying Jamit were headmaster Dennis Reba, former headmaster John Lang Likong and councillor Liew Hui Hua.

Jamit was briefed by both the contractor and Dennis on the work progress. The new block houses eight classrooms.

“It is progressing smoothly, which is now more than 70 percent completed. It was slightly delayed because of the movement control order (MCO) from March to May. Now they work in full force and work is scheduled to be completed end of this year,” said Jamit.

The budget for the project is approximately RM1.5 million, inclusive of consultant and architectural fees.

The construction commenced in November 2019. It is hoped that the new block would be able to ease the acute shortage of classrooms currently faced by the school, which has over 600 pupils.

SK Sungai Amang is situated about 5km from Kapit town. It currently has 18 classrooms and two pre-school classes.

The new block will also have toilets and a central courtyard with the existing blocks for gatherings and outdoor activities, and in future, game courts, if additional funds are available.
