PADAWAN: The Persatuan Segu Bunuk Penrissen (PSBP) will assist surrounding villages to preserve the image and culture of Bidayuh Segu Bunuk.

Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin said the establishment of the association could help the Segu Bunuk people to thrive in various aspects of development.

He noted that the association had implemented a lot of activities and programmes that benefitted the seven villages under it – Kampung Segu Bunuk (Bunuk), Kampung Semur Bunuk, Kampung Sorot, Kampung Punau, Kampung Sibatuh, Kampung Bratan and Kampung Kiyu.

“Since it was established in August 16, 2018, PSBP has already played significant role in helping the villagers, and that everyone has similar understanding and goals.

“The establishment of the association has been an achievement for the people of Segu Bunuk.

“I hope that everyone at the seven villages can work together to help preserve the culture and history of our people here for our future generation,” he said when officiating at panggau PSBP at Kampung Bunuk, yesterday (April 16).

He urged the association and its member to not only focus on preserving and defending the Segu Bunuk culture, but also to assist children, especially in education and acquiring employment.

“Acquiring skills like welding, mechanics, agriculture, and so on can also help to improve our children’s livelihood.

“Do not underestimate the skills that they have learnt as this can be a source of income for them because this also helps our community improve.

The Plantation Industries and Commodities Deputy Minister urged the villagers to preserve the Segu Bunuk language and culture for future generations.

“Kampung Bunuk’s famous longhouse also need to be restored so that it can be retained as a place to be visited especially during the Gawai Festival.”

Willie hoped that PSBP continue its effort to help the villagers and the surrounding villages under them in ways possible, as well as retaining the Segu Bunuk culture.
