BETONG: The tourism industry in Betong has not reached its full potential, opines Betong assemblyman Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat.

“Many tourist attractions here need to be promoted more, such as Bukit Sadok, the fortress of legendary Iban warrior Rentap, who fought against the (Rajah) Brooke administration,” he said when officiating at the district-level Gawai Carnival on Saturday (May 14).

The carnival, held over last weekend, was packed with activities like karaoke competitions, blood donation campaign, cooking contests, tug-of-war competition and many more.

Gawai Bazaar sales will also be held from May 14 to 28. Food and handicraft products will be on sale, with 32 businesses featured.

Robert also shared that Sarawak’s political stability had brought significant development to Betong despite several hiccups in ensuring development and growth reached the areas.

He said when attending a Gawai dinner hosted by Gerempung Tuai Rumah (GTR) Kecil Spaoh District later that evening.

Robert hoped that GTR Kecil Spaoh continued to contribute and identify potential marketable areas.

He elaborated that this was important to fulfil the government’s objective and product demand for markets outside the country. He added that a Spaoh airport was currently in the plans.
