KUCHING: If Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin thinks the RM300 allowance given to councillors by the state government is an abuse of power, then he should report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), says a councillor.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) councillor Goh Tze Hui (pic) was asked for his comments on Willie’s allegation that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government had abused its power by making such a move.
In Sunday’s papers, Willie cautioned that once this was implemented, it would rank among the most blatant misuse of public funds.
“I am pretty sure that if we are now in an election time, some provisions in the election laws pertaining to election campaign funding would have been breached,” he stated in the papers.
Goh said he would like to remind Willie that if he did make a report to the MACC, then the same must be done in Penang and Selangor where their councillors are receiving RM4,000 and RM1,100 respectively.
In 2018, the Penang government appointed 48 individuals as councillors for both Penang Island City Council and Seberang Prai Municipal Council where each councillor will receive a monthly allowance of RM4,000 — RM2,500 monthly allowance, RM1,200 meeting allowance and RM300 telephone allowance.
Sarawak councillors, prior to their appointment ceremony on July 31, had never received any monthly allowance with the exception of a meeting allowance of RM100 per meeting.
