KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) encourages the public to lodge reports with local enforcement team if eatery operators and businesses do not comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) at their premises.

Its mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the local council would be monitoring the SOP compliance among the eatery operators in areas under its jurisdiction, constantly reminding them to practise high standard hygiene.

“The enforcement team checking the SOP compliance in Sarawak comprises police and army personnel who are accompanied by a local council enforcement officer.

“If the eatery operators do not obey the SOPs set by the government, what we can do is to remove their licences but we cannot close their premises,” he told reporters after inspecting the SOP compliance at the premises here in Jalan Padungan yesterday morning.

Reminding premises and business operators to adhere to the SOPs, he stressed that concerted efforts to practise social distancing are necessary to curb the possibility of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in the state.

“It’s better to take all precautionary measures because we have been fighting this for the past few months.

“We should continue to carry on with what we have been doing for the past few months such as social distancing and avoiding crowded places.

“The pandemic is not over yet. Whether we will be having the second wave or not depends on the efforts of people to contain the virus.

“Therefore, I strongly encourage the public to play their role by alerting us, including those who are checking the SOP compliance so that immediate actions can be taken to rectify the situation,” he added.

The public can reach the MBKS enforcement team by contacting its head of division enforcement officer at 019-8281495 or 010-9589238.
