KAPIT:  Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat and Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang attended the International Women’s Day celebration here on Sunday evening.

The event, organised by the Kapit Chinese Women Association (Kapit CWA), took place at Meligai Hotel.

In his speech, Jamit lauded Kapit CWA for organising the celebration.

“This is a meaningful activity to recognise the significant role played by women in the family, society and country at large.

“Gone were the days when women were seen as home manageresses. The government emphasised on the empowerment of women with quality education, hands on skills and knowledge.

“Today, women, like their male counterparts, are involved in all fields including social-economics, politics, education, health care and business. We have many women ministers in the cabinet and holding senior positions in both the private and public sectors,” said Jamit.

He added, “Behind every successful man, there is a woman. This illustrates the great influence of women.

“In Malaysia, the populations of men and women  are almost equal. They are valuable assets to the country.

“Tonight, there are many men around. This proves that men and women must complement each other and work hand in hand to make things happen.”

At the function, Jamit announced some funds for Kapit CWA to carry its activities for the year.

Nyabong, in his speech, said he respected women.

“When it comes to studies, they are awesome since they do better than men. At institutes of higher learning, there are more girls than boys. This proves that girls are more serious in studies because they are determined to be successful in life.”

At the function, he announced a grant of RM5,000 to Kapit CWA.

The chairperson of Kapit CWA Penghulu Wong Kie Ing and Temenggong Tan Kian Hoo also spoke.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of ‘ang pow’ (red envelopes containing cash) to 36 elderly women who were members of the association aged 65 and above.

Present were Nyabong’s wife, Seriah Thomas, Kapit Division Resident Nyurak Keti and Kapit District Officer Cerisologo Sabut.
