KUCHING: Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei’s resignation from Democratic Action Party (DAP) provides Sarawakians much food for thought.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said Wong’s resignation came as a surprise to many.

Dr Sim, the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president, said he was impressed with Wong’s commitment to serve his constituents until the dissolution of the State Assembly.

“Wong has also announced his refusal to be renominated as DAP’s Padungan candidate for the state election.

“He is providing people much food for thought by voicing out his disappointment over DAP’s refusal to listen to any dissenting voice and lack of inclusivity in opinion and viewpoints,” Dr Sim said in a statement on Monday (July 27).

He also pointed out that Wong’s frustration included the non-fulfilment of DAP’s political mission when it was a ruling party at the federal level.

“DAP’s promises to the people seem to have gone down the drain as it failed to realise the people’s hopes and expectations,” he said.

Dr Sim also agreed with Wong that DAP kept on employing political attacks even when it became part of the ruling coalition.

“For Sarawak, we need some positivity in order to see the state move forward,” he added.

Dr Sim also took a jab at DAP’s recent statement aimed at Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations president Datuk Richard Wee and many others leading Chinese organisations.

“Such statement was most hostile and arrogant, signifying DAP’s disrespect and a lack of gratitude to the contributions of Sarawak’s Chinese community.

“Statements issued by certain DAP individuals have caused resentment in the Chinese community.

“I’m glad that Wong has pointed out such unruly behaviour. He is not alone. There are lot of people who feel the same way, especially after the 2018 General Election. More and more people are getting sick and tired of DAP’s political means to seek survival.

“DAP’s deviation from its long-preached original cause, in the eyes of many, is also a political betrayal,” he said.
