KUCHING: State elected representatives welcome the proposal for the people in the rural areas to get their Covid-19 vaccination done one-go instead of in phases.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said this method is viewed as more effective in which health officers will not have to make multiple trips and it is to ensure that most of the communities living in the rural areas would be protected.

SDMC chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, disclosed that the federal government has agreed in principle to the proposal.

It is a wise move to vaccinate people in the rural areas at one time as this can ensure that no one is left out. These groups are also exposed to the Covid-19 virus so we must make sure that every Sarawakian gets vaccinated. I advise the people in my constituency to get vaccinated for their own health.

Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah

Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, Dalat Assemblywoman

In my constituency, about 70 percent of the residents have registered to be vaccinated but we want more to register. I hope that the federal government would agree to this considering the situation in rural areas is different from those in town areas. Due to the distance and accessibility factor, there are some worries of the default rate for the second dosage.

Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing

About 65 percent of the people in Meradong have registered for the Covid-19 vaccination. The proposal will make it more convenient for people in the rural areas and makes it easier to achieve our target of herd immunity. However, I believe the administration of the vaccine is quite delicate and there might be challenges especially in terms of logistics. Moreover, would we have enough manpower to carry out the exercise?

Datuk Snowdan Lawan

I agree with the proposal to carry out vaccinations in the rural areas in one shot but I hope there would be a common vaccine given to everyone. My constituents have been reminded to work closely with the authorities to ensure the vaccination programme is a success.
