BELAGA: It is high time that the district of Belaga be elevated to a division, said its assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang.

The utilities assistant minister (rural electricity) said it is the wish of the local people so that Belaga would see more development similar to other places in the state.

“The people aspire and dream of better development so today, I am presenting their proposal to the chief minister. They want the small district of Sungai Asap be elevated to a full district and Belaga be elevated to a division.

“That is our request and in our humble hearts, what we want is for the transformations that are happening in other areas in the state be reflected as well in Belaga,” he said during a ceremony to launch the Belaga Waterfront here today.

Liwan also urged for residents in Belaga be given due appreciation for their sacrifices in contending with the construction of mega projects in their vicinity — the Bakun and Murum dams.

“It would be incorrect to say that Belaga has not been receiving development; it has through the implementation of Projek Rakyat, Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) and the Upper Rajang Development Agency (Urda).
