Rescuers retrieve body of drowned man

Rescuers retrieved the victim's body from the river and brought it to the control post for the family to verify.

KUCHING: The body of a man feared drowned in Sarawak river yesterday (March 19), was found about two metres from the control post today (March 20).

A spokesperson from the State Fire Department operations centre said the body was found around 2.30pm at a depth of 12 feet.

Rescuers successfully retrieved the body and it was verified by family members before it was handed over to the police for further actions.

The victim identified as Kamalddin Azmi, 29, was earlier said to have fallen from the jetty walkway near the New Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) building, Petra Jaya on Friday around 3.45pm.

Following the incident, rescue agencies such as the fire department, marine police and Civil Defence Force (APM) rushed to the scene to carry out search operations.

The search operation today was called off at 3pm after the victim’s body has been retrieved.
