KUCHING: Rescuers on Saturday used four different methods to locate a 27-year-old man who went missing after he allegedly jumped from Satok Bridge last Friday (Mar 26).

The methods are diving around the area where the victim jumped, surface searching, water circling and grappling.

Sarawak Fire Department director Khirudin Drahman revealed that these methods are normally done based on the rescuers’ experience in such cases.

“We are just worried that the victim may be stuck to the roots of trees.

“Which is why we did water circling because the river condition was calm and with the method, it can create waves and make whatever is at the bottom of the river to surface.

“Currently, this case is the fourth one that happened this year,” he told reporters when met at the scene.

Khirudin hoped that the victim could be found soon as the operations not only involved the rescue agencies but also the local community.

When asked on the motive, he pointed out that it was a sensitive case as it involved family issues.

“This sort of case is categorised as out of the ordinary and it does not happen often.

“Looking forward from this case, we should find out how we can create a support system to help those who are in need,” he said.

Fire Department Zone 1 chief Yusri Basri said the operations which started at 8am involved 18 firemen, five policemen, 15 marine police and 10 Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel.

As at press time, the victim has not been found.

The victim had reportedly stopped his Proton Wira car on the bridge, got out from the car, climbed the bridge’s fence and jumped into the river in an apparent suicide at around 3pm last Friday.
