KUCHING: Residents in several low-lying areas here are reaching out for help as non-stop heavy rain continues to fall, causing flash floods in several areas.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) has already mobilised personnel to badly affected areas.

Among the places affected are Kampung Tabuan Dayak, Kampung Surik in Stapok, Kampung Sinar Budi in Batu Kawa, Kuching Waterfront and several areas in Kota Sentosa and Petra Jaya.

A resident in Kampung Tabuan Dayak shared his experience in which floodwater entered his family home, forcing the family to seek higher ground.

Shane Noel said at about 11pm last Tuesday, water had risen to the first step of the house. Fifteen minutes later, the house was flooded and everything happened so fast.

“Before the water entered the house, my family and I had already moved our stuff to a safe place but our efforts were wasted as the water kept rising, and eventually to waist level.

“This happens every time it rains heavily and we have reported to the authorities to improve the drainage system in our neighborhood but no action was taken.

“Nobody did anything about the drainage system even though the residents have complained for years.”
