KUCHING: The residents of Taman Mawar at Kampung Gita Tengah are pleased that three shoplots of an abandoned shoplot building in their housing estate had been transformed into a DBKU Community Library cum youth centre.

The library cum youth centre was declared open by Tupong assemblyman, Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman during the   launch of the second series of Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) Inclusivity with Community programme at the housing estate on Sunday (Sept 27).

The abandoned shoplot used to be a place for illegal activities.

Its transformation is set to improve the image and environment at Taman Mawar for the better.

‘This was once a very dirty area. Teenagers liked to hang out here for unhealthy activities. This project has made Taman Mawar a conducive place for youth to develop.’

‘Formerly, there was no library.  Students had to go far if they wanted to go to a library to study. I hope now they will make use of the facilities to study harder.’

‘I hope the locals will take advantage of the   library. It is a good initiative by DBKU to encourage students to study and have fun.’

‘I hope this area will have security guards because I am worried those who used to be involved in negative activities here will return. We, villagers, were afraid to approach them because they looked dangerous. We are thankful for this library. I hope students will use it well.’
