KUCHING: Hope Place Kuching is dedicating Mother’s Day celebration to single mothers, honouring their love and sacrifice with utmost respect.

The charitable non-governmental organization (NGO) is currently providing essential food and household necessities to 55 underprivileged single mothers.

Among them is Lina Mengiring, a 41-year-old residing in Bandar Baru Samariang with her four children. Lina’s life took an unfortunate turn when her husband passed away suddenly in March this year, leaving her as a single mother.

“Lina, left to care for three school-age children and a toddler, faces numerous challenges in keeping her family together. Without a source of income, she worries about unpaid bills, rent, and daily expenses,” the NGO said in a statement yesterday.

However, Lina thanked for the support she has received from a friend of her late husband, who has been lending a helping hand.

Another single mother, Ebelin Uras, shared a different story as she has been a victim of domestic abuse. The 42-year-old resides in Plaman, Serian, with her four school-going children.

Despite being diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure this year, Ebelin remains determined to provide for her children.

According to the NGO, Ebelin is currently unemployed and has moved back to her father’s house to undergo long-term dialysis, which is crucial for her survival. Her eldest daughter is currently studying matriculation at a local university, and Ebelin proudly attests to her daughter’s dedication and academic achievements.

When she isn’t undergoing dialysis, Ebelin assists her father in cultivating and selling black pepper, which serves as their main source of income. Additionally, she receives monthly aid of RM400 from the Department of Social Welfare.

The third single mother is 66-year-old Gulang Ajak. Although she has a son, he resides far away and seldom visits.

“Gulang shared her remarkable story of single-handedly raising her son for over 30 years. Despite longing to spend time with her grandchildren, she rarely gets the opportunity. Her sole income is derived from the sale of wild and organic vegetables, including limes and lemons, which she cultivates at home. To ward off loneliness, she keeps several dogs and cats as companions,” the statement added.
