KUCHING: The long-standing problem of illegal dumping in the vicinity of MJC Batu Kawa shophouses is finally being tackled head-on with the ongoing demolition of all rubbish disposal centres in the area, which is expected to be completed month-end.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai was confident that the demolition would end the problem of  illegal dumping at MJC Batu Kawah shophouses, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable environment for residents.

“While the demolition works of the centres are progressing and pending the delivery of the garbage bins to the individual blocks, MPP will temporarily place the smaller bins at identified strategic spots in the parking lots for the general waste disposal of the residents and business operators.

“We are pleased to announce that door-to-door rubbish collection services will commence on April 1,” he said in a statement.

However, Tan Kai said the bins are solely for the use of residents and business operators within MJC Batu Kawah shophouses, and warned against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly bulky items, by outsiders.

“MPP, along with the management corporations and residents of MJC Batu Kawah shophouses, will monitor the situation of waste disposal, and individuals caught red-handed for illegal dumping of waste in any public place within MJC vicinity will be penalised under the By-law 18(3) of the Local Authorities (Cleanliness) Bylaws, 1999.

“All business owners who are generating excess waste should apply for additional collection requests (ACR) by submitting an application to the Public Health and Municipal Services Division of MPP.

“Through the ACR, the additional waste from these business premises could be better managed,” Tan Kai added.
