KUCHING: The locals have been urged to respect and honour the National Day on August 31 by giving salutations to the national flag and national anthem.

Kota Samarahan Municipal Council chairman Datuk Peter Minos said it was true that Sarawak got out of British colonialism and simultaneously creating Malaysia with Malaya and Sabah on Sept 16, 1963

“It is also true that it was only Malaya that got independence from Britain on August 31, 1957.

“But Malaysia had officially declared that August 31 as our nation’s National Day. Why cannot we gracefully accept this national decision. Why query about it,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said many nations which are federations or confederations in nature like the United States of America and Australia had one common national day even though each state or province got their independence or freedom at different years in the past or in the beginning.

“Once a common national day was declared, after some amicable compromises were arrived at, all states or provinces complied and no longer asked doubtful questions,” he said.

As such, he said there was no need to bring up issues like Malaya and Kuala Lumpur not treating Sarawak fairly or justly when very basic and fundamental things such as the National Day or national flag or national anthem came up.

“We must not get confused. We ought not.

“There is a saying: curse not your family just because you have differences in the family. The same for a nation: curse not our nation even if we as citizens have some differences with each other,” he added.
