OYA: The Chinese New Year celebration at Oya Square here on Friday night brought ‘live’ and cheers to the usually quiet bazaar of this sub-district.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah was not only impressed with the celebration, but also by the good cooperation shown by members of the organising committee.

She said that the village development and security committees had teamed up to organise the event and this was a good example for the younger generation to emulate.

“Oya and Dalat always cooperate and complement each other in various aspects including social and economy,” she said when officiating at the event.

Fatimah, who is also Dalat assemblywoman, added that the spirit of good cooperation had been imbued among the communities since they were young.

She said the involvement of Melanau children in a fashion show based on the Chinese community concept that night was an example.

Fatimah added that there were also a lot of Melanau students studying in Chinese schools here and Dalat, and this was an advantage for them to be proficient in other language.

She described both scenarios as a good interaction process of learning other culture and language.

“Through tonight’s (Friday night) celebration, God willing, we can respect each other better despite our different backgrounds,” she said, adding that this is our uniqueness in Sarawak, particularly in Dalat.

The fashion show competition, involving 15 children aged nine years old and below, fireworks display and lucky draw added colour, sight and sound to the celebration.

Dalat and Mukah District Council walikota Kadir Jamil, Dalat District officer Kueh Lei Poh, Temenggong Hendi Suhai and Penghulu Sim Tan Chuan also attended the event.
